Dr Rosemary Schwarz
Dr Rosemary Schwarz graduated from UNSW in 1969 and interned at Royal Canberra Hospital, there meeting a PhD student who she married. Being therefore “anchored” in Canberra I accepted the position of Registrar in Psychiatry, which I held for 2 years prior to spending 4 years in Michigan USA completing a psychiatry residency.
The Michigan years were a joyful time of personal and professional development. I was chief resident at my training program, qualified for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the USA and gave birth to my first daughter.
I returned to Melbourne in 1976, board qualified but not certified in USA. Since returning to Australia I obtained my FRANZCP and have worked mainly in private practice. Along the way I worked for many years in liaison psychiatry at The Royal Womens Hospital as the first psychiatrist attached to a neonatal intensive care unit. I worked for 10 years at the Refugee Mental Health Clinic of The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture. These attachments have influenced my private practice.
I continue to work in my private practice and am a member of The Victorian Mental Health Tribunal.
My greatest achievements are my 4 adult children and my 6 grandchildren.
